Staff Picks for January: A Trip Down Memory Lane

Writer's picture: Vector AirVector Air

Yes, we’re back! It’s 2025, and what better way to kick off the new year than with some tasty picks from the treasure trove of the airgun and airsoft world? Strangely enough, this month’s roundup has a bit of a nostalgic feel—a return to some tried-and-true classics—but don’t let that fool you. This isn’t about resting on old laurels; it’s about taking the best of the past, polishing it up, and bringing it into the future. And hey, since this is going out on a Thursday, let’s give a little nod to #ThrowbackThursday, but only a tiny one—we’re reminiscing, not living in the past.

Here’s how it went down: we asked the team to pick something they’re really excited about. What emerged is a theme of revivals, upgrades, and new takes on old favourites. So, in no particular order (except for the one we asked people in), here are the staff picks for January:

Karl’s Pick: KalibrGun ARGUS

KalibrGGun ARGUS: a Wood and metal air rifle labelled "ARGUS 45" on a white background, featuring a modern design with a tactical look and integrated sight rail.

Let’s start with a blast from the (not-so-distant) past. The KalibrGun ARGUS isn’t exactly new—it first hit shelves back in 2020, right around when we opened our doors. But 2025 has brought us a revamped version, and Karl couldn’t be more thrilled.

What’s new? This updated ARGUS features a redesigned safety, a shaped wooden cheekpiece, and a refined trigger and cocking system. These tweaks make an already solid platform feel even more polished, and - Checks Notes - it’s cheaper than the VIXEN! That’s right—this might just be the most affordable way to own a CZ-made airgu. Add a stunning walnut stock to the mix, and you’ve got yourself a serious contender. Karl’s already added it to his shortlist—shouldn’t you?

Craig’s Pick: Gletcher NGT (Nagant M1895)

Gletcher NGT (Nagant M1895): A black Russian revolver with a brown textured grip is shown on a white background. The text "NGT F" is visible on the side.

If you’ve been keeping up with our blogs, you probably saw our excitement about the return of Gletcher to the UK market. (And if you haven’t, what are you even doing? Go read it!)

So to no one's surprise, Craig's pick? The Gletcher NGT; a CO2-powered replica of the iconic Nagant M1895 revolver.

Why is Craig so hyped? Because for what you’re paying, you’re not just getting a plinker—you’re getting a piece of history. Sure, it’s a replica, not a deactivated wall-hanger, but let’s be honest: wouldn’t you rather shoot it? Thought so. This is the perfect way to show Gletcher that we in the UK are serious about wanting their products back on our shelves. Craig’s already sold on it—are you?

Tee’s Pick: Sig Sauer P229

Sig Sauer P229: Black handgun, SIG Sauer P226, on a white background. The gun features textured grips and a threaded barrel.

Buckle up, folks, because Tee’s taking us back to 2016. Remember the Sig Sauer P229 from their ASP line of CO2 airguns? It was designed as a budget-friendly way for those who couldn’t own the real deal to get a taste of Sig goodness. But while it was a decent effort, it didn’t exactly blow up the market.

Fast forward to today, and Sig Sauer has given the P229 a second chance. This new version features an improved slide and trigger action, plus it uses the same magazine system as the C15, which means it finally feels right. Even better, the quick-fit CO2 handle makes loading gas a breeze—no more scrabbling for a key! Tee’s loving this revamped classic, and honestly, so are we... were still not entirely sure how it is this cheap.

Luke’s Pick: Vector Optics Paragon 4x24 Prismatic

Vector Optics Paragon 4x24 Prismatic Scope Black Vector Optics rifle scope with adjustment knobs and "+" and "-" buttons, set against a plain white backdrop.

Ah, the nostalgia is strong with this one. If you’ve been with us since the beginning, you might remember us raving about the Vector Optics Calypos. It was an affordable, mil-spec prismatic rifle scope with crystal-clear optics, and it became such a favourite that we even used its silhouette as the category image on our website. But, alas, it was discontinued in late 2023.

Enter the Paragon 4x24 Prismatic, and boy, does it deliver! Vector Optics took their time, but they’ve brought back that same magic, and Luke’s already smitten. The Paragon feels even better than the original, with crystal-clear glass and the added bonus of a red-dot footprint (MAG/RMS/SMS) for quick switching between 4x and 1x magnification. It’s everything we loved about the Calypos—only better. If you’re looking for a top-notch prismatic scope, this one’s an absolute gem.

Wrapping up January

So, there you have it—our January staff picks, a perfect blend of old favourites and exciting revivals. Whether you’re into precision airguns, historically rich revolvers, or next-level optics, there’s something here to pique your interest. Let us know which one’s your favourite—and if you’ve got any throwback gear stories of your own, we’d love to hear them in the comments.

As we roll into February, things are about to heat up. First up, the British Shooting Show is back, and yes, we’ll be there! Even better, we’re running the shooting range again this year. A little friendly reminder, though: we know our queue was the longest last time (thanks for the love!), but if you could play nice and be patient, we’d really appreciate it. The wait may be worth it, but we’re all here to have a good time!

Oh, and February isn’t just about shows—it’s also Karl’s and Luke’s birthdays! So, if you see them at the stand, feel free to say hi or maybe even bring some cake. (We’re not saying they expect it... but they wouldn’t say no either.)

Here’s to another exciting month ahead. See you in February—on the range, at the show, or right here on the blog! 🎯
